What did the World Search for in 2012? Google Search Trends 2012 Explained

The full Google’s Zeitgeist 2012 website is now live, marking its 12th annual look at all the searches that constituted what it calls the year’s ‘Zeitgeist’ – or, the spirit of the time. I find this summary absolutely fascinating as it gives us an insight into what we are interested in as a society whether we admit it or not.  This is not always great new and I have to say i find it pretty disconcerting for our future that the second most search for term was Gangnam Style!

The top trending search term in 2012 was Whitney Houston, who died in February. Unsurprisingly, Gangnam Style featured highly in second place, while Hurricane Sandy, iPad 3, Diablo 3 and Kate Middleton made up the remaining top 5.

The full top ten search terms were as follows:

    1. Whitney Houston
    2. Gangnam Style
    3. Hurricane Sandy
    4. iPad 3
    5. Diablo 3
    6. Kate Middleton
    7. Olympics 2012
    8. Amanda Todd
    9. Michael Clarke Duncan
    10. BBB12

Google have released a video that summarises the finding and as far as I’m concerned just reminds us how much power they have as a company to have this data on us all available but there yo go – Its an interesting one anyway!

Lets hope next year we all surprise ourselves and take an interest in something that actually matters such as the fate of the world. that said I have definitely searched for Gangnam Style as well.

Here’s to 2013!
